A few weeks ago, I invited some of my VIP clients to join me in doing some good and also taking some sweet pictures. I asked them to participate in a book drive with me. There are two things near and dear to my heart: kids and literacy. In my pre-photographer days, I worked in politics. I often thought about what my platform would be if given the opportunity to really advocate for something. It was an easy choice as I love to read and literacy is utterly fundamental to our success in life. So, when I thought about how I wanted to make a difference right here in my own neighborhood, the answer came back to books. But, I wanted to include others too. I didn’t want to just buy a bunch of books and donate them to the library. I wanted to come together others. I created my “You are a Reader” mini sessions to (1) encourage children to share their favorite stories with me and (2) gather books for a children’s organization. I am thrilled, overwhelmed, amazed at the response from my clients who filled every available time slot, invited their friends, and brought more books then required. I am so pleased to deliver these books to Methodist Children’s Home in Redford, MI later this month. I also know how valuable it is for children to share their reading and love of books with others. It is a way to cement the importance of reading. I hope that their love of reading is increased by sharing their favorite books with me. I sure got a kick out of watching them find their favorite pages, tell me about their favorite characters, and share the delight of love of books. I hope that they will look at these pictures and know that they are readers!
