These friends are always coming up with a new place to shoot. I don’t think we’ve been to the same place twice. For this session we headed down to the Detroit Riverwalk for some family photos and to explore a little.
I love shooting family photography in downtown Detroit because the blend of urban city and wild natural landscape makes for a great backdrop. The Renaissance Center rises from behind the trees like a shiny century watching over us. Nature and it’s soft greenery contrasts with the structural metal bike racks and hardscape of the area. Also, you can ride a carousel.
Meeting families down here for a session is always fun and I never know what to expect from kids as we explore everything the riverfront has to offer. It makes for great photos and natural expressions that surprise even me.
This day was no different as my one of my favorite subjects picked up every stick he could find, made the silliest faces EVER, and of course, gave me his “cool dude” pose. I’ve been photographing this family for almost 8 years. I consider it a privilege and a blessing to have known them for this long and count them as great friends.

PS: This is a great location for extended families as well. There are lots of spots to pose groups together and then break out into families. There are awesome spots for capturing children too!
